Featuring a Canon 10.1 megapixel CMOS sensor and 10 frames per second, EOS-1D Mk III delivers enhanced creative control extending beyond photojournalism and sports shooting.
22 February 2007 - Building on 70 years of Canon innovation and 20 years of EOS evolution, today Canon proudly announced the release of the EOS-1D Mk III. This highly-anticipated professional camera, a culmination of years of research and development, delivers a superior 'ten out of ten' technology that is simply inspirational.
"The Canon EOS-1D Mk III was designed for people who live and breathe photography, setting precedents for those who understand the combination of speed, quality and durability," said Stuart Poignand, Marketing Manager, Consumer Imaging Products Group, Canon Australia. "Today Canon is proud to introduce this revolutionary product to those who share our passion for photography."
Ideal for photojournalists and sports photographers
When a split-second can mean the difference between capturing an award-winning photograph and consigning a file to the trash, the EOS-1D Mk III delivers. Canon's dual DiG!C III processors have twice the processing power to enable 10 frames per second for a burst of 110 frames with Ai Servo AF. DiG!C III provides brilliant results in low light conditions with ISO 3200. Ideal for sports photographers and photojournalists, the EOS-1D Mk III offers new Area AF with 19 high-precision points and 26 assist points, as well as 1/300 second flash sync (with EX-series Speedlites).
Built for the demands of the toughest environments, the EOS-1D Mk III has greatly improved durability and performance. Water and dust-resistant measures are incorporated at 76 points throughout the camera and the shutter durability is enhanced to 300,000 cycles. The EOS integrated cleaning system reduces dust on the sensor, giving greater peace of mind when on assignment.
A ready to shoot EOS-1D Mk III weighs in at only 1,335g (225g lighter than its predecessor, including battery).
Beyond photojournalism and sports
The EOS-1D Mk III is also ideal for commercial and portrait shooting in studios. The addition of a Live View function allows photographers to preview on the 3.0" LCD or an external monitor to achieve precise image composition and focussing. An improved 14 bit A/D conversion gives fine gradation and a wider colour gamut. The EOS 1D-Mk III also features a highlight alert - perfect for portrait and wedding photographers - ensuring flawless exposures.
USB 2.0 and the new wireless file transmitter WFT-E2 provide seamless connectivity for smooth workflow. Live View provides a great tool for photographic educators, enabling live demonstrations and collaborative working.
Expanding EOS system
To complement the EOS-1D Mk III, Canon has announced the release of a range of dedicated accessories.
The WFT-E2 is the new lightweight and durable wireless file transmitter for EOS. The WFT-E2 has three communications modes (FTP, PTP and HTTP) and can also act as a USB host for direct recording to external media and to connect a GPS device to record location. The WFT-E2 weighs only 65g and is dust and water-resistant.
The EF 16-35mm f/2.8L II USM is the newest addition to the EF lens family. Boasting an 82mm front optic that achieves a larger imaging circle, the EF 16-35mm f/2.8L II USM features improved optical performance, while the addition of two elements with an optimised coating reduces ghosting and flare.
The Speedlite 580 EX II delivers enhanced performance and durability to the Speedlite range. The 580 EX II has improved dust and water-resistant seals and a metal mounting foot for greater connection and communication reliability. Design improvements have reduced flash recycle time by 20%, offering superior flexibility and reliability in flash photography.
Also available to complement the EOS-1D Mk III is the new data verification kit DVK-E3.
